SELECTING THE RIGHT STEEL MATERIAL

New Zealand has a wide range of environmental conditions, from harsh West coast beaches to snowy alpine regions, your local conditions will determine which roofing materials are suitable for your project. See the chart below for more information on environmental categories and recommended materials.

For specific environmental category information see COLORSTEEL® tables below.

ENVIRONMENTAL CATEGORIES

Environmental categories are largely based on proximity to the coast and are used to determine which materials are suitable for your project. Our quick reference table below shows which Freeman products are suitable to use within different environmental categories. These categories can vary across different areas of New Zealand so it is important to talk to your local Freeman Group branch for an accurate information regarding your project.

WARRANTY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Your property’s environmental category is a classification of the harshness or severity of the environment it’s in, which affects the length of your warranty. We categorise this, by describing the surrounding environment as:

  • Mild
  • Moderate
  • Severe
  • Very severe
  • Extremely severe

A number of factors can contribute to the environmental category, but the most significant A number of factors can contribute to the environmental category, but the most significant consideration is how close the property is to the coast.

The following is a guide to which products are appropriate for which environmental category.

On the tables below, ‘Paint’ refers to no flaking, peeling and excessive fade and ‘Perforation’ means no perforation as a result of corrosion.

MILD ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Environmental conditions characterised by:

  • No salt deposits.
  • No smell of salt in the air
  • Typically starts 5 kilometres (depending on your location) from breaking surf such as is found on exposed coasts or greater than 1 kilometre from calm saltwater such as estuaries.

SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTS

In New Zealand, there are areas where local conditions create an increased likelihood of corrosion. Special consideration should be given when selecting products and materials in these areas. For more information about special environments please talk to your local branch.
